Posted: 14 Jan 2012 11:35 PM PST Word raging through the internets - Bleeding Cool, Comics Beat, Comics Alliance - has it that DC is going through a new logo design, replacing the one they just redesigned a few years ago. I think the new peel-back design looks great, and a very good idea if DC’s finally getting serious about the appliance business. Jan Strnad & Richard Corben: Ragemoor Posted: 14 Jan 2012 11:31 PM PST And now they’re back together again, this time for a new mini-series at Dark Horse called Ragemoor. Here’s what Dark Horse has to say about it: “Ragemoor! A living castle, nurtured on pagan blood, harborer to deadly monsters! A fortress possessed of its own will and ability to change itself, with the power to add and destroy rooms and to grow without the help of any human hand. Its owner is mad with jealously, its servants aren’t human, and its secret’s horrific!” That sounds awesome, and I’m looking forward to it. The first issue goes on sale at the end of March, which means you can pre-order now through your retailer. Weekend Reading: SOPA, DC, Toth and Redshirts Posted: 14 Jan 2012 11:13 PM PST Tom Spurgeon at The Comics Reporter speaks out against SOPA, the Stop Online Piracy Act. It really is a terrible bill that does more harm than good and Tom makes a strong case to do everything you can to stop it from being passed. Mark Evanier doesn’t like the proposed law either. If you’re an aspiring fantasy/sci-fi writer, the Clarion Workshop is accepting applications, according to Boing Boing. You can find a list of Clarion alumni here. And award-winning sf writer John Scalzi provides even more details and words of encouragement about Clarion. Posted: 13 Jan 2012 09:23 AM PST Now DC’s New 52 is changing. Heidi at Comics Beat reports that the New 52 is about to become the "Recent 46 and the New 6" with the cancellation of 6 titles with issue #8, and 6 others coming in off the bench. Plus the return of Earth 2 and crossovers. If you had 8 months in the office pool, you're the winner. I had 10, so I have to cough it up. Happy new year! Norm Breyfogle: Batman Beyond Unlimited Posted: 12 Jan 2012 12:15 PM PST Later on, I got to meet him when he was drawing Prime for Malibu Comics’ Ultraverse (he designed the character and I was lucky enough to be around to see all his sketches). Still later, I got to work with him directly when he did some character designs for a superhero project that Chris Ulm and I were pitching around. Now, after some time working for Archie Comics, Norm is back on Batman in the newly relaunched Batman Beyond Unlimited title from DC, edited by another pal Jim Chadwick. The first issue goes on sale in February, and Norm posted an interior page from it on Facebook (you can see it over there on your right). OnStar API introduced, encourages partners to create apps atop its data Posted: 10 Jan 2012 02:58 PM PST Here at CES 2012, OnStar has just announced their own closed API that will allow developers to tap into OnStar data for use in their own apps. They've also made it known that its first partner on the API front will be RelayRides, a social network that allows anyone to rent out their own vehicle when they aren't in use. This means that you can log in to the RelayRides app, and it will utilize OnStar services to find which cars are available, where they are, and will then allow you to book the car, and even unlock the doors and start it up, all using the smartphones app. Vehicle owners will be able to set their rates and times. This is just the beginning of the potential of what we should expect from developers as it pertains to OnStar data. More partners will be announced soon, and developers are encouraged to sign up for access, which you can do by emailing developers@onstar.com. Acura NSX concept brings hope for the return of a classic Posted: 10 Jan 2012 02:10 PM PST The death of a legend left many asking "Why?" Honda has always been pushing the envelope in reliability and fuel efficiency, from the days it rocked Detroit with its Civic CRX HF, a car which was fun to drive, yet provided the fuel efficiency people wanted; to its current line-up which holds true to that same spirit. However, the lack of a true sports car has haunted Honda's line-up from they day they killed the NSX. While Detroit pushed ahead with its pony cars, Honda was left in the dust put-putting along. Well those days are hopefully soon to be over. The rebirth of its sports car, the Acura NSX will push the industry and consumer standard of what we expect a sports car should be. As we all fight for greater fuel efficiency and alternative fuels, that leaves the word of sports cars a thing of the past. Or does it? Posted: 09 Jan 2012 08:01 AM PST Or not. It’s a puzzle, and without Google, I’d never have pieced it together. For a long time, I didn’t even remember the “Kerry” part. I could picture the art style, but it never led me to the name of the comics or their creator. Fortunately, over time I pieced together fragments of my brain to come up with the guy’s first name, and then went hunting. I figured he had to have a web presence - any cartoonist still working would have that. He didn't. Weekend Reading: Frank Miller, Star Wars, Ghost Rider, Deathlok Posted: 09 Jan 2012 07:33 AM PST Everyone enjoying the new year so far? So’s the internet, so let’s see how: Tom Spurgeon at The Comics Reporter wrapped up two weeks of holiday interviews with a pile of interesting creators. Even if you’re not specifically into their individual works, you should read them all. It’s a fascinating look at lots of creative people in the biz. I especially enjoyed the chats with Kim Thompson, Art Spiegelman, and Todd DePastino on Bill Mauldin. Is there a worse piece of entertainment than the Star Wars Holiday Special? What about its book tie-in? If you’ve been interested in the Gary Friedrich/Marvel/Ghost Rider lawsuit, Daniel Best at 20th Century Danny Boy has the judgment paperwork to read. iOS 5.1 beta shows that quad-core processors are coming to iPad and iPhone Posted: 06 Jan 2012 12:49 PM PST It's expected that Apple's next mobile iOS processor, which will likely be called the A6, will debut alongside the new iPad 3 that should be introduced sometime in the next month or two. Today we're learning that the latest iOS 5.1 beta includes processing core management controls that support both dual-core and quad-core chips. One would of course conclude that the expectation here is that the A6 processor will be a quad-core chip. There's nothing more than rumor for now, but it definitely wouldn't surprise us, based on Apple's update cycle. There are already quad-core Android tablets floating around, and we find it a little hard to believe (though not impossible) that Apple would stick witha dual-core chip rather than iterating to a quad-core design for the next iPad and the iPhone 5. What do you think? Sound off in the comments! My pal, actress and voice director, Stevie Vallance has been doing cartoon voices for some time. We just finished working together on a show that's coming up later this year on Nicktoons. It was a real treat to watch her in the booth, bringing out the best performance from our actors and helping them breathe life into the words on the page. When she’s not doing that, Stevie runs a series of voice-over workshops called Tooned In! Animation Voice-over Acting Workshops. Norm Feuti’s Gil Debuts From King Features Posted: 06 Jan 2012 08:42 AM PST He started the strip as a webcomic, then put it on hiatus to work on other things, then brought it back through King Features. You can read about that process here. It debuts this week in classic newspaper syndication (you can also find it online). It’s a great, funny strip and Feuti’s an excellent cartoonist. I interviewed him awhile ago when he was first starting on Gil and I wish him nothing but success. Bookmark the strip, write to your local paper to make them aware of it, and read the heck out it. There’s also the Gil Blog with lots of fun extras to enjoy. Bleeding Edge TV 410: Apple iMac RAM upgrade tutorial Posted: 05 Jan 2012 04:26 PM PST
In this episode we teach you how to install RAM in your Apple iMac. The model we are using is the 27-inch 2011 iMac, which has a quad-core processor and supports up to 4 RAM chips. Installing your own RAM is an easy way to save a lot of money, rather than paying for the extra RAM with the iMac. In our case, we install 16 GB of RAM in under 5 minutes, saving ourselves over $500 in the process - and it is so easy that anyone can do it, and all you need is a Philips screwdriver and a little courage. As you see in the video, all you need to do is unscrew the RAM cover, and pull on the tabs to remove the RAM that ships with the iMac. From there, you simple insert the new RAM, push it in until it clicks, and reinstall the cover. Turn it on, and go into About This Mac to get a look at the amount of RAM that your system is recognizing. If it is showing the amount you installed, you are done! Even better, you just saved yourself a bunch of cash as well. You can pick up the RAM at Amazon for a great price, and of course, the iMac is there as well. AT&T 4G LTE hits NYC, LA, San Francisco, 8 other cities Posted: 05 Jan 2012 09:34 AM PST Today AT&T is pushing forward with its 4G LTE deployment, lighting up 11 new markets with super-fast mobile broadband. Cities included in this rollout, which just so happens to double AT&T's LTE footprint, include New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Chicago, and Boston. This brings its number of LTE-covered markets to 26, reaching 76 million people. That sounds great, but it's still nowhere near Verizon's 200 million people covered by its own 4G LTE network. Also, devices. AT&T is lacking in 4G devices. However, that's nothing that a little CES love can't fix next week. Bleeding Edge TV 409: Fujitsu ScanSnap review Posted: 04 Jan 2012 02:25 PM PST
We review the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500M in this episode of Bleeding Edge TV. The ScanSnap S1500M allows you to digitally scan your documents, receipts, business cards, and photos so that you can save them all to a searchable archive on your computer. It also includes the ability to upload and store your documents in a cloud storage service like Evernote and Google Docs with just the press of a button. In this video I challenge myself to clear off my desk in just one day. My desk has thousands of pages of documents, pictures, and a bunch of business cards that have been cluttering things up. If you want to me if I succeed or fail, hit the play button above - and if you want in on the action, check out the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500M on Amazon. ASUS set to start Android 4.0 rollout for Transformer Prime on January 12 Posted: 03 Jan 2012 03:30 PM PST We've gotta hand it to ASUS for being quick about updating the Transformer Prime to the latest release of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The company has said on its Facebook page that it will begin the Android 4.0 rollout to Transformer Prime owners on January 12, just over a week from now. When compared to how some of the other companies out there are being all slow about the Ice Cream Sandwich update on their devices, ASUS is looking like one of the few Android device makers that cares enough about its userbase to put Android 4.0 on the fast track. Weekend Reading: Ajax, Tintin, Chaykin & Barreto Posted: 02 Jan 2012 10:50 AM PST Beau Smith writes a wonderful tribute to his friend and frequent collaborator, Eduardo Barreto. If you’re tracking the future of digital comics, Appy Entertainment’s Paul O’Connor has an interview with the guy behind Operation Ajax, Daniel Burwen. The writer Lance Mannion goes to see Tintin. There have been lots of reviews over the internets already, but I’m partial to this one. “In fact, The Adventures of Tintin [is] as good an Indiana Jones movie as Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade. In parts, it’s as thrilling and new as Raiders of the Lost Ark. Throughout, it’s much better than Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and a reminder that as great as the young Harrison Ford was what made the movies was the spirit of adventure that infused them, and that spirit was a boy’s (and girl’s) spirit.” Tags: Weekend Reading: Ajax, Tintin, Chaykin & Barreto originally appeared on Comix 411 on Mon, January 02, 2012 - 10:50:51 |

Stephen DeStefano is one. Keith Giffen is another. If you have storyboard experience, then Nickelodeon is looking for you. They need a storyboard artist on their hit show: T.U.F.F. Steven Moffat’s Sherlock Holmes: England Wins Posted: 02 Jan 2012 10:35 AM PST Steven Moffat (Doctor Who; Coupling) and Mark Gatiss (The League of Gentlemen; Poirot; Doctor Who) were involved and anything they do is on my “Check This Out” list. I don’t have a great love for the classic Sherlock Holmes of Arthur Conan Doyle - I grew up watching Basil Rathbone’s Holmes fight Nazis so everything’s fair game with me. So I watched all three episodes of Sherlock starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, and loved them all. Brilliantly told, well-acted, modernized, and yet in keeping the parts of Holmes that I enjoy, and dropping in knowing nods to the Doyle stories. Verizon Wireless will charge you $2 to pay your bill online Posted: 30 Dec 2011 09:35 AM PST Do you pay your Verizon cell phone bill online or by phone? You might want to look into other options, because starting Jan. 15, those methods of payment will include a $2 fee. As reported by Droid Life, Verizon will impose a $2 "convenience fee" for one-time online and phone payments, starting next month. The move is intended to "balance the support costs" associated with those payment options, Verizon said in documentation posted by the blog. Users can avoid the fees by signing up for Auto Pay, which makes automatic monthly payments via a major credit or debit card on the same day every month, or when your account reaches a specific dollar amount. With Verizon, the minimum payment is $15 and the max is $250. Other ways to avoid the $2 fee include: using an electronic check, which will pull the funds directly from your bank account; paying online via your bank's bill pay site; going to a Verizon Store; using a Verizon gift, rebate, or friends and family referral card; or mailing a paper check. Verizon did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The job is posted through an employment agency and the company name is kept a secret so the agency can earn their commission. Posted: 29 Dec 2011 05:01 PM PST My only Stan Lee story is from the one time that I met him. It was social. It was political. It was dinner. That’s right. This wasn’t some convention fly-by “how are you?” We actually had dinner together. Though he would certainly not remember it as I was but one of many dining companions that evening. Back in 1994, Marvel Comics had just purchased Malibu Comics out from under a stunned DC Comics and a quick “executive back-slapping” dinner was organized at Chinois in Santa Monica. Chinois is one of those places that you don’t really go to unless you’re on a really terrific date or someone else is picking up the tab. In this case, someone else was picking up the tab. All the Marvel higher-ups of the day, like Terry Stewart, were there and so was the Malibu gang – Scott Rosenberg, Dave Olbrich, me and Chris Ulm. As we were ushered to our table, I found myself standing next to a very jovial Stan. Tags: Happy Birthday, Stan Lee! originally appeared on Comix 411 on Thu, December 29, 2011 - 5:01:52 |
James Leary & Mitch Byrd @ IndieGoGo Posted: 29 Dec 2011 04:54 PM PST Later on, he moved over to DC and worked with Beau Smith on the very manly Green Lantern spin-off, Guy Gardner: Warrior series. Now, in conjuction with writer and actor James Leary (he played Clem on Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Mitch is working on a new title called James Leary’s House Of Screams. James and Mitch, along with cover artist Steve Scott, are working through IndieGoGo to try to raise the necessary money to make it all happen. Take a look and see if you’d like to help. I love Mitch’s work (I was a fan long before we worked together) and I can’t wait to see his new work in print. So go make it happen.
